Rutherford County Arts Council and Isothermal Community College have partnered to revive the famous Snuffy Jenkins Festival, beginning with the Snuffy Jenkins Festival Reunion, to be held Saturday, November 7, 2009, on the Isothermal Community College campus. Bluegrass and old-time music will be featured in the festival honoring the innovative banjo player, comedian, and Rutherford County native, Snuffy Jenkins. This first event will be headlined by Doc Watson and David Holt, and NC Banjo legend Raymond Fairchild. Phil and Gaye Johnson and many other regional and local favorites will also perform during the day-long celebration. Food and craft vendors will be on hand, and an open jam area will be provided for musicians who want to play as well as listen. The festival will also feature historical talks regarding Snuffy Jenkin’s life and significance in local and national music history, as well as discussions about Snuffy’s fellow pioneers in bluegrass and traditional music. In addition to the College partnering in the re-creation of the festival, The Foundation Performing Arts Center is co-producer, and Isothermal’s nationally acclaimed public radio station, WNCW, will be media sponsor of the event. Special guests and honorees will include original festival founder Ben Humphries and Snuffy’s son, Toby Jenkins. |
